The Family Office

You may have already seen this space on my Instagram awhile back, but I thought I would share here too. This space used to be an oversized pass through of sorts and our computer resided on our kitchen table after I realized having the office in the guest room didn't function for our family. With the kiddos getting older and homework on a computer becoming a necessity it was time to come up with a more permanent solution.  My goal was to create a space that was not bank breaking, but would still have longevity. So we sold our buffet piece to a friend and in came two desks, a filing cabinet we have had for years, and the chairs move from here to the dining space when we need them. I wanted to keep is simple and clean like the rest of our home especially since it can be seen from every living space. This space serves us well. It even acted as a sort of school room for my boy. He's had health issues since January and we ended the school year mostly doing school from home. Having it in a central location also means as parents we can monitor whats going on. Having an 11 year old boy in a big world full of temptations means it's never too early to monitor screen time closely. I have enjoyed editing our home over the last couple of years into a space that really functions for the family.

The Dining Room

Another space almost complete! Are you seeing a trend of a whole lot of almost there posts? Creating a home takes time to say the least, especially when I am trying to be intentional with every single piece we bring in rather than just filling it with place holders. We had six of these West Elm chairs and I dreamt of the day we could actually fit them around a table. Our old farmhouse table, which I still love, was just too small for our new dining room. We host a lot and I know we will still be pulling in extra chairs, but with our new table we can fit even more people. A huge win in our book. When searching for a table this last year plus I knew I wanted to keep the wood light and have it be more on the modern side to fit the architecture of our home better. I also did not want it to be too modern in case we did move one day and we went with another style home as our neighborhood has more cottages and bungalows to choose from. This table fit the bill perfectly! It balance modern and classic beautifully. The finish may be the most gorgeous thing ever especially paired with the apron detail. I bought the table on Rejuvenations premier day that they host a couple of times a year. After seeing the table in person I feel like I got a steal! I also added the fun wooden pot from our local Sugar Boo store and topped it with a foxtail fern. I did have another plant there and due to the fact the finish is no longer on the hardwood floors it left a horrid ring. One day we will have them refinished, but for now I will just hide my mistake with this lovely wooden chunk. What's left in this space? Not much, but the wall to the left in the first image is begging for an amazing piece of art. I am just not sure what I am looking for. Maybe another photo from our travels, an abstract, or something else completely? For now I will just sit and wait until the piece crosses my path.

The Powder Bath - Progress

I know I should wait till this space is complete before giving a reveal, but if you remember the BEFORE then this looks not too bad at all. Still on my to do list is to have the counters changed, paint the trim to match the walls in which I painted SW alabaster like the rest of the house, and I already have this faucet waiting to be placed. I would say the previous owners did this bathroom in maybe the early 90's and it was just too fancy for my more laid back taste. Originally I planned on removing the cabinet and replace it with a floating shelf/vanity, but the longer we lived here I realized on school mornings one of the kiddos would get ready in there so we need the drawer space to hide all the sprays, combs, and soon to be makeup. I then considered just painting the cabinet, but dreamed of having a natural wood vanity somewhere in this house. The Mr decided to just see what was beneath the dark red stain and lo and behold it was a beautiful wood. We added this hardware from Rejuvenation and it seriously is just so gorgeous. Also in the pic it looks like they are not lined up, but they are, just a weird camera angle in the tight space. We had the new light fixtures added and had the electrical boxes moved up to add height to the space. It helps make the space feel not so tight and houses the mirror I found at Home Goods awhile back. I wanted the lights to be super simple and a little unfinished looking to keep with the overall laid back look I was trying to achieve. I swear it's harder to get a laid back look rather than a polished one or maybe it's just designing my own house that makes me second guess every step. Also how many times can I say "laid back look" in one post. Anyhow, I love the way the new fixtures look with my favorite bulbs. The TP holder was a life changer. We used to have one that you had to remove the little round thing and actually replace it with another roll of paper then throw away the old roll. The horror I know, but for real how hard is it? Now I find that everyone actually changes the roll on their own due to the ease of it all. It's the little things. Finally the way the toilet is off set with the builtins drove me a little nuts within the design realm. I couldn't change either due to cost so I just balanced the wall with fun little tassels from our local Sugarboo. Now to finish off the space to match my original inspo board. Love seeing a design come to life!
